Hellooo HBLers, Entrepreneurs, and those of you who watched LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA world championship!
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers won Game 7 of the NBA finals after being down 3-1 in the series to capture Cleveland's first NBA championship. It was the first championship for ANY Cleveland professional sports team in 52 years. Most analysts thought it was an impossible mission, since no team had ever come back to win after being down 3-1 in the NBA Finals. Apparently the impossible is possible, and so it made me think about what LeBron did to win despite the odds.
You can do what Lebron did.
Three Ways You Can Win Big Like LeBron James:
#1: Have a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (a "BHAG"). The idea of a BHAG was first proposed in Jim Collins' seminal business book "Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies." LeBron James had a BHAG that he announced to the world. He left the Miami Heat-- where he had won two champions--to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers and "Bring a championship to Northeast Ohio." Now remember, he announced this goal at a time when no Cleveland team had won a championship in any sport in 50 years. It was a BHAG if anyone had ever made one.
#2: Assemble the Team You Need to Win. Winning almost anything is a team game, and you must have complimentary pieces around you to help you win. LeBron is widely rumored to have gotten his coach fired in February (GQ says he was right to do it). He was also rumored to have largely orchestrated the Cavaliers player roster including the Cavaliers obtaining Kevin Love a few years ago. You know your strengths and weaknesses better than anybody -- go out and get the team you need to win!
#3: Believe that Impossible is Nothing. To win the NBA championship you have to win 4 games out of a 7-game final series. Going into the NBA Finals the Cavs were facing the Golden State Warriors, who had set the record for wins in the regular season. To make it harder, the Cavs got themselves in a 3-1 hole, meaning the Cavs would have to win the next 3 games in a row (including two on Golden State's home court) to win. It was an impossible mission: no other team had come back to win after going down 3-1 in NBA Finals history.
But to win big, as an athlete, as an entrepreneur, or as a person, you have to believe that impossible is nothing.
Ask the New York Giants after they beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008. Impossible was nothing.
Ask LeBron James after his Cavs came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship. Impossible was nothing.
And ask Muhammad Ali, who beat George Foreman, Joe Frazier and a host of other boxers no one thought he could beat. Muhammad Ali believed impossible is nothing. As a matter fact, Ali coined the phase "Impossible is Nothing" in 1974 and he partnered with Adidas to use it as their slogan.
Be audacious with your goals.
Assemble the team that you need to win.
And believe that impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men.
Those are the 3 ways you can win big like LeBron James.
